October 2026 Issue of The Whistler
📚 October is National Book Month!
A great time to celebrate books and the joy of reading with your child! Reading together during the early years helps children build language and vocabulary, develop listening skills, use their imagination, and learn about emotions and the world around them.
Reading also creates valuable time for connection. Whether you read before bed, look at pictures together, or let your child choose the same favorite book again and again, these simple moments support learning and strengthen your relationship.
Even a few minutes of reading each day can make a difference. Babies benefit from hearing your voice, toddlers love pointing to pictures and repeating words, and preschoolers can begin predicting what happens next and telling parts of the story themselves.
Books to enjoy together:
- Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? — Bill Martin Jr. & Eric Carle
- The Very Hungry Caterpillar — Eric Carle
- Chicka Chicka Boom Boom — Bill Martin Jr. & John Archambault
- The Snowy Day — Ezra Jack Keats
- Llama Llama Red Pajama — Anna Dewdney
- The Rabbit Listened — Cori Doerrfeld
- The Pigeon Has to Go to School! — Mo Willems
- The Day You Begin — Jacqueline Woodson
And remember – the best book is often the one your child wants to read with you! Visit your local library, let your child help choose books, and enjoy discovering stories together. 📖❤️
