Water Safety Tips for Young Children

Warm-weather water play is a great way for young children to stay active and have fun, but safety should always come first. Whether you’re visiting a pool, lake, or splash pad, a few simple precautions can help keep everyone safe.

Stay Close

Always keep children within arm’s reach when they are playing in or near water. Avoid distractions and designate a “water watcher” if multiple adults are present.

Use Bright Swimwear

Choose brightly colored swimsuits, such as neon orange, pink, or yellow, to make children easier to spot in the water.

Wear Life Jackets at Lakes

For boating, docks, or deeper water, use a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Water wings and inflatable toys are not safety devices.

Follow Water Safety Rules

Teach children to:

  • Ask an adult before going near water
  • Walk instead of run around pools and splash pads
  • Never push or roughhouse near water

Be Aware of Different Water Environments

Pools, lakes, and splash pads each have unique hazards, from slippery surfaces to sudden drop-offs and currents. Supervise children closely and stay alert to changing conditions.

Don’t Forget Sun Protection

Apply sunscreen, encourage regular water breaks, and take time to cool off in the shade.

The most important water safety tip: Young children should always be supervised by an adult when around water. A little extra attention can help ensure a fun and safe day for everyone. 🌞💦
