April 2026 Issue of The Whistler
April is National Financial Literacy Month, a great time for families to build healthy money habits. While young children may not understand complex financial concepts yet, they begin learning about money through everyday experiences and by watching the adults around them.
Families can try one small activity each day to build money awareness together.
Week 1: Understanding Money
Day 1: Talk about what money is used for.
Day 2: Play “store” at home with toys or snacks.
Day 3: Let your child help pay at the store.
Day 4: Look at coins and talk about what they look like.
Day 5: Sort coins or play counting games.
Day 6: Read a children’s book about money.
Day 7: Talk about needs vs. wants.
Week 2: Spending and Choices
Day 8: Let your child choose between two snacks within a budget.
Day 9: Compare prices while shopping.
Day 10: Talk about how families decide what to buy.
Day 11: Make a simple family shopping list together.
Day 12: Talk about saving money by turning off lights or wasting less food.
Day 13: Play a pretend grocery store game.
Day 14: Talk about something the family is saving for.
Week 3: Saving and Goals
Day 15: Make a Save / Spend / Share jar.
Day 16: Set a small savings goal.
Day 17: Decorate a savings jar.
Day 18: Count the money saved so far.
Day 19: Talk about waiting for something special.
Day 20: Celebrate reaching a small savings milestone.
Day 21: Read another money-themed book together.
Week 4: Helping and Giving
Day 22: Talk about ways to help others.
Day 23: Put coins in the “share” jar.
Day 24: Donate toys or items the family no longer uses.
Day 25: Discuss how money can help people in the community.
Day 26: Let your child choose a small way to give.
Day 27: Talk about being thankful for what you have.
Day 28: Review what your child learned about money.
Bonus Days
Day 29: Talk about saving for the future.
Day 30: Celebrate Financial Literacy Month as a family!
