August 2026 Issue of The Whistler

As a new school year begins at Reach-Up Head Start, it’s the perfect time to help your child build routines that will set them up for success. Young children thrive when they know what to expect. Predictable daily routines help them feel safe, confident, and ready to learn.

Here are a few simple ways to prepare your child for the transition back to school:

🌞 Create a Consistent Bedtime

Aim for the same bedtime and wake-up time each day, even on weekends. A well-rested child is happier, healthier, and better prepared to learn.

🍎 Start the Day with a Healthy Breakfast

A nutritious breakfast gives children the energy they need to play, learn, and explore throughout the morning.

🎒 Practice the Morning Routine

A week or two before school starts, begin practicing getting dressed, brushing teeth, eating breakfast, and leaving the house at the same time each morning. This makes the first day feel familiar instead of overwhelming.

📚 Read Together Every Day

Spending just 10–15 minutes reading together builds language skills, strengthens your bond, and creates a calming daily routine.

❤️ Talk About School in a Positive Way

Share excitement about meeting teachers, making friends, and learning new things. Encourage your child to ask questions and express how they’re feeling.

👋 Encourage Independence

Give your child opportunities to practice simple tasks like putting on their shoes, washing their hands, cleaning up toys, or carrying their backpack. These small successes build confidence.

Starting healthy routines now can make the transition back to school smoother for the whole family. Remember, every child adjusts at their own pace, and small, consistent steps make a big difference.

We can’t wait to welcome your family back to Reach-Up Head Start for another year of learning, growth, and fun. Together, we’ll help your child build the confidence and skills they need for a successful school year!
